Abstract :

Since the 1950s, the Korean chaebols’ behavior and the decisions they make aroused the interest of scholars in the field of management. This approach relies on the peculiarities of their conglomerate strategies, of their centralized organizations and their Confucian culture. The grounded research exposed in this paper tries to understand why and how the family governance of chaebols, considered as one of the efficiency sources of the "Korean dragon" until the crisis of 1997, is considered ten years later as a factor of handicap with regards to the standard managerial theories. The understandability of this paradox involves a longitudinal observation of a process embedded in a not easy to reach sociocultural environment. This process observation leads to the “de-construction” of the classical concept of corporate governance and requires to have recourse to the post-modern (“foucaldian”) concept of governmentality.
